The Academy of Coastal Carolina was but a dream in the minds of Lauren
Clemmons and April Varnam when they decided to go into the education
business three years ago. Both public classroom teachers who recognized
the need for one-on-one educational assistance in the Brunswick County
area, Lauren and April opened up their own tutoring facility in 2003.
They named it The Bright Spot Educational Enrichment
Center. They continue to be a successful and growing center for
children and teenagers to experience an increase in confidence and
self-esteem through the concept of one-on-one tutoring. The Bright
Spot is also responsible for Camp Sunshine, a summer day camp for
children, as well as many other extracurricular/enrichment activities throughout
the year.
With the success of The Bright Spot, Lauren and April began to seriously
consider the idea of creating their own private school and met with
Theresa (Terry) Cox, who had more than 20 years experience in both
public and private school settings. After many late night meetings
and phone calls, the rest is history. The three all agreed on a vision
for the venture - The Academy would be not only a place for children
to have access to the very best educational opportunities, but a safe
environment that would foster strong values and confidence through
learning; something hard to find in many school systems today.
Invitations were sent, an ad placed in the paper and The Academy's
very first Open House was held on the evening of May 4th, 2006. It was obvious that that word had quickly spread, as the three founders
presented to a full house.
The Academy of Coastal Carolina has since experienced wonderful support
from the community and has currently enrolled 40 students in grades
K-8. These energetic directors hope that the success will continue into the 2007-2008 school
year and that their mission to create strength in values and in academic
success will be fulfilled though every student involved.
