The Principals

Lauren Clemmons, Division Principal

Lauren graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. Upon graduation, she returned to Brunswick county to pursue a teaching career. Lauren was employed by Brunswick County Schools for four years, during which time she taught kindergarten, first, and second grade. Her time spent in the public school setting provided a wonderful opportunity for professional development in the core academic areas of reading, writing, and math. In 2003, Lauren partnered with April Varnam to begin The Bright Spot Educational Enrichment Center of Shallotte, which offers one-on-one tutoring to local school children. In order to extend their services to the southern region of the county, a Southport center was founded in 2005.

April Varnam, Division Principal

April Varnam graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2000. Upon deciding to pursue a career in teaching, April went on to East Carolina University to complete her Master of Arts in Teaching in 2003. Following the receipt of her graduate degree, April joined Lauren Clemmons to launch The Bright Spot, a tutoring facility for students grades Pre-K through 12. During the 2005-2006 school year, April provided private academic instruction at the fourth and sixth grade level. The Bright Spot has recently expanded to Southport, where April serves as Director and Administrator of Enrichment Programs.
